August 27 Storm Update
Posted on Aug 31st, 2024
Dear Fellow Riviera Homeowners:
The Riviera Board of Trustees would like to provide some initial updates as we work through addressing the August 27th storm damage.
About The Storm:
- For those of us who were in The Riviera Community when the storm hit at approximately 9:30pm Tuesday night, it was a frightening experience inside our homes as the storm raged and the power went out, but we couldn’t begin to fathom the damage we could hear taking place around us.
- We awoke Wednesday morning to the sight of beautiful old trees and large boughs down everywhere! Some of our fellow homeowners had trees fall onto their homes, and vehicles with leaves and branches littered everywhere. Some homes suffered damage including broken windows, blown open doors and rainwater intrusion.
- Unfortunately, The Riviera Community along with Camp Sokol and Sturgeon Beach appears to have been ‘ground zero’ for this storm which reportedly included 60-70 mph wind gusts. In the face of all of this, we're pleased to report we have not been made aware of anyone being injured and that’s the most important thing.
RHOA Response Actions to date:
- Our primary goal has been to get the roads passable. The night of the storm we engaged Maple City Tree Service at premium emergency rates to clear Marquette so that emergency vehicles could get through.
- And shortly before dark Thursday night, Maple City’s team of seven had cleared Marquette Drive and all but a section of Riviera near Arbor. If you see Davin, Dawson, Dennis and the rest of the Maple City team, thank them, for they really came through for us!
- Throughout the following days it was heart-warming to see neighbors checking on neighbors and those with generators offering power sources and cool shelter to those without. Folks offered food, ice, water, etc. to each other – we are truly a special community of neighbors who look out for each other.
Further Actions and Moving Forward:
- Be aware that there could still be broken or weakened branches that may fall from trees on their own or during the next storm.
- If you had a tree fall or limb break off, please take responsibly for removal of debris on your property as well as on the road easement. If debris from your tree was pushed to the other side of the street, please have that removed as well.
- This weekend Maple City will complete the opening of Rivera at Arbor, which is last major road blockage we have. The rest of our roads are largely passable.
- Power line crews contracted by AEP have been all over the area dealing with the downed power lines. Power to most homes in our community has been restored as of 6pm Thursday.
- We hope that Xfinity Comcast will be able to restore service within the next couple of days. Crews have been working in our community as of Friday.
- The cleanup work will not be completed within days. It could take weeks. Please have patience while your neighbors await the arrival of their tree and debris clean up services.
- Whatever you and your own service providers can do to remove debris off the roadside and in any common areas around you will be greatly appreciated.
If you have questions, please contact RHOA President Rob Gow.
Thank you,
RHOA Board of Trustees
